Lightning poses a greater threat to individuals than any other natural hazard. However, the incidence of human statistics caused by lightning strikes can be significantly minimized through recognition of the Lightning risk, pro-active OH & S risk management and an effective communication of the risks and remedies to those groups considered to be at higher risk.

Those groups include:

• Drill and blast crews
• Outdoors sports
• Mine workers
• Rail workers
• Pipeline workers
• Electrical workers
• Office workers who use fixed line telephone headsets

A risk management program should encompass:

• Policy - The lightning risk needs to be recognized as being an issue to which all Occupational Health and Safety professionals must consider as a normal consideration of their important role.

• Education - The effective communication of relevant information that advises staff, contractors, and visitors that a Lightning Safety Policy exists at the site, and what are the precautionary actions which must be taken, and the procedures which are to be followed during any threat.

• Notification - Advising all personnel in an affected area of an imminent threat condition, via audible and/or visual messages.

• Detection - The use of technology such as handheld Lightning Detection to provide advance notice of an approaching lightning threat, or Early Warning Systems that can measure pre-lightning conditions.

• Protection - Including the installation of lightning protection systems on susceptible infrastructure to provide safe areas for personnel, and to protect all electrical and electronic systems on site.
