Line
Interactive Topology can be best explained using
the analogy of a tandem bicycle which has 2 sets of
pedals to drive the rear wheel. Line interactive operates
similarly where two independent power sources share
the workload, by sensing the incoming mains voltage
and where this is irregular, the two power sources can
take over the power output completely, or in the case
of a voltage dip or surge, either buck or boost the
voltage up or down, to provide a regulated voltage output.
In this type of system, the battery charger, inverter
and source selection switch are usually replaced by
a single Inverter/DC converter component. This Inverter/DC
converter charges the battery, and also converts DC
current back to regulated AC for voltage output to connected
loads.

AC line
power is still the primary power source, with the battery
acting as the secondary. When the line power is active,
the AC is filtered through to the load whilst the Inverter/DC
converter charges the battery. When the power fails,
the unit senses the change, brings in the DC, and then
operates in reverse.
The inverter/DC converter
regulates the output voltage through a Buck/Boost regulator
which can supply additional power during voltage sags/brownouts.
The main advantage of Line Interactive systems is that
the inverter/DC converter unit is always present at
the output, which gives a very fast response time to
a power failure.
The line-interactive UPS provides
a far superior level of protection over the Standby
UPS equipment, although does not provide the isolation,
regulation and no break output as is provided by
an Online UPS.
